Do You Take Care Of Your Back?

Ignore back aches at your own peril.

I never cared about the chair I sat on. I had my last chair for over 6 years and it was basically two planks of wood.

I would hear people talking about their chair at work being uncomfortable and would think they were making a fuss over nothing.

That’s until a few weeks ago.

I sat down as normal, had a coding session, and when I got up, I knew something was up with my back…for days I had excruciating pain in my back and groin (yes, back problems can cause groin pain). I wasn’t able to sleep either because the pain was present in every position.

The signs I wasn’t taking care of my back had been there for a long time. As far back as I can remember I’ve had minor aches after sitting down, but I just brushed it off.

Even after that incident, it wasn’t me, but my wife that made the investment in a good chair. And despite it’s ridiculous cost compared to what I’m normally willing to pay, I’ve no regrets, as the difference is staggering. The support is far superior to anything I’ve had before, and I don’t get the same aches.

If you’re a programmer, I want you to think, how many hours do you spend sitting? Is there any furniture you use more than your chair? So for something that we use so often, isn’t the investment worth it?

So if you experience back pain after sitting down, don’t ignore it, make sure your back is well supported.
