Revealed: The Best Programming Language
I’m constantly reading the same question posted online.
“Which is the best programming language?”
‘Experienced’ programmers are quick to answer.
Java, C, Python, C++, C# etc. All the usual suspects.
And surprise, surprise, it just so happens that the best language is the one they’re using.
So let me say, anyone that answers that question with a specific language is doing so based on conjecture. 100% conjecture.
How many programmers have used every language in a production system such that they can make an informed comparison?
I say none.
The correct question to ask is not, “Which is the best programming language?”, rather, “How do I pick a programming language?”
When answering this question, there are two important things to consider:
- Community
- Job opportunities
Every well-known programming language has a strong, well-established community. So you can’t really go wrong here.
The second thing to consider is getting a job. You can easily research job opportunities. I just searched for Python on reed.co.uk and there were 1,770 jobs in the whole of the UK. I searched for C# and there were 5,185 jobs, almost 3 times as many as Python.
Is this the same everywhere? No. Search in your country / local area before you make a decision.
So, the next time you read someone stating that their language is best, simply roll your eyes and walk away 🙄 🚶♀️.
